Frequently Asked Questions

What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy uses a wide range of manual techniques to both identify and treat dysfunction which can often lead to pain.  The use of manual therapies allows function to be restored and optimal health to result.

Do I need a referral from a doctor to see a physiotherapist?
No, physiotherapists are registered health professionals who are able to diagnose and treat without the need for referral.

Can I get ACC cover for my injury?
If you have had a specific incident causing your injury you may be covered by ACC insurance.  You can fill in the required forms with your physiotherapist without the need to see a doctor first.  However, if you need time off work due to your injury you may need to see your GP about this.

Does ACC cover all my treatment costs?
No, they pay a part of the treatment cost.

How long are the treatment sessions?
Generally 30 minutes.  However, if you have complex injuries then it can be up to an hour.

What if I think I need X-rays or further referral to other health professionals?
Your physiotherapist is able to refer you to the appropriate professionals to help with this if it is warranted.  This includes referral for ultrasound scans, X-rays and referral to specialists such as orthopaedic surgeons and sports physicians.

What can I expect at my first treatment session?
First you will fill out some paperwork, including ACC forms if you require them.  Then a full evaluation of your issue including the history of your condition will be undertaken.  Following this your physiotherapist will form a diagnosis and discuss with you an individualized treatment program which will be started.

Will I need to do anything at home to help my treatment?
Depending on your presentation there is a good chance that there will be exercises your physiotherapist will require you to do at home to ensure you get optimal results. Your physiotherapist will be able to give you appropriate exercises to aid your specific requirements.  The goal of physiotherapy is to empower you to be able to help yourself.

Will Physiotherapy treatment hurt?
The aim of all treatments is to achieve the most benefit with the least discomfort.  However, sometimes there will be a tolerable amount of discomfort involved with treatment.  Your physiotherapist will explain all treatments to you before they are undertaken and ensure you know why these therapeutic selections have been made.  Make sure you communicate with your physiotherapist if you are at all concerned about this.
